About

Bio

Tonya Bottomley is a native and resident of western North Carolina. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Winston-Salem State University. She completed courses in design, sculpture and painting at Brenau University in Georgia and studied anatomy and figure drawing at the Scottsdale Artists’ School in Arizona. Tonya started her career as a full-time artist after having worked for years in the medical profession. With an origin in representational art, Tonya now works primarily in abstraction. Her work is represented by galleries in North Carolina and is held in private, public, and corporate collections.

Artist’s Statement

“My abstract paintings are influenced by the American art movement of Abstract Expressionism. The paintings are process oriented – and that process is an exercise in discovery, invention and risk-taking. There is also a fragile balance between spontaneity and control, between order and chaos, between simplicity and complexity. The process is never straightforward but always full of surprises. When I begin a painting I never know what the end result will be – for me that is both the joy and the struggle of abstract painting.”

“The physicality and immediacy of gestural mark making is often key to my approach. I blend automatic drawing, spontaneous brushwork, and intuitive color choices to express the depths of my subconscious. Many of the painting surfaces have areas of apparent randomness where the paint has been splashed or dripped – these sections are juxtaposed with areas where the paint has been applied with a more deliberate hand.”

“I am not a painter who wants to do something consistently over and over. My style is in a process of incremental evolution because I am always searching – and experimenting. The history of my search can be seen in the remnants of early marks and paint layers. Shifted lines and shapes give the viewer a window into the indecision that comes with the process of searching for my truest expression.”

“Making art is my way of being present in the world. My paintings speak not only with line, shape and color, but with the passion and substance of living with purpose. I am influenced by life experiences, my surroundings, and my subconscious. As with instrumental music, an abstract painting should evoke an emotional response. Positive energy, emotion and visual enjoyment – these are the things I hope to impart to the viewer. My work is celebratory and is meant to appeal to the senses and heighten the human experience.”
